Ransomware Resilience: Implementing Immutable S3 Object Lock & Air-Gapped Backups

Executive & Architectural Key Takeaways

  • ✓Modern ransomware strains actively seek out and delete network-attached backup drives and shadow copies before encrypting production data.
  • ✓Compliance-mode S3 Object Lock prevents even the root cloud account administrator from deleting or modifying backup archives for a designated retention window.
  • ✓The modern 3-2-1-1-0 rule mandates: 3 copies, 2 different media types, 1 offsite, 1 immutable or air-gapped, and 0 errors during recovery testing.
  • ✓Automated daily backup restoration drills in an isolated sandbox guarantee that recovery point objectives (RPO) can actually be met during a crisis.

The Modern Ransomware Threat: Targeting the Backups First

Ransomware attackers have evolved far beyond simple phishing emails. Once inside a network, adversaries spend an average of 14 days conducting quiet internal reconnaissance. Their primary target is the backup infrastructure: Veeam repositories, NAS shares, and cloud storage buckets.

If an attacker has domain administrator or cloud console access, standard backups can be wiped in minutes. The only true defense is cryptographic immutability: storage that physically rejects delete or overwrite commands regardless of credentials.

02

Configuring AWS / Cloud Storage Immutable Object Lock

By creating an S3 bucket with Object Lock enabled in Compliance Mode, every uploaded PostgreSQL snapshot or disk image is locked for 30 or 90 days. Even if an attacker compromises the root AWS credentials or deletes the AWS account, the underlying data cannot be erased until the retention timer expires.
