Executive & Architectural Key Takeaways
- ✓Passkeys are cryptographically un-phishable because the private key never leaves the client device Secure Enclave.
- ✓SMS one-time-passcodes (OTP) are vulnerable to SS7 interception and SIM-swapping fraud; Passkeys eliminate OTP reliance entirely.
- ✓WebAuthn challenge-response verification cryptographically ties authentication to your exact domain origin, neutralizing fake phishing sites.
- ✓Cross-device sync via Apple Keychain, Google Password Manager, and 1Password ensures users never get locked out of their accounts.

Why Passkeys Make Traditional Passwords Obsolete
Over 80% of data breaches involve stolen or weak passwords. Even with two-factor authentication, reverse-proxy phishing kits (like Evilginx) intercept session cookies in real time. Passkeys solve this fundamentally: during authentication, the browser signs a random cryptographic challenge using the device’s private key. If the user is on a phishing domain (e.g. natelad-verify.com instead of nateladagency.com), the browser refuses to sign, completely protecting the user.
WebAuthn Registration Ceremony Flow
The server generates a cryptographically secure random challenge. The client calls navigator.credentials.create() using the SimpleWebAuthn library, which prompts the user for Touch ID or Face ID, and returns the signed credential to the backend database.
